Abstract

This book contributes to the development, standardization and implementation of Computer-Based Interlocking Systems (CBIS). The detailed analysis of the existing CBIS is accomplished to identify possible areas of improvements. The means of improving existing CBIS are presented as economical, Universal CBIS, which is independent of track layout and rules and regulations of a railway authority within a country of application. It is based on practical experience derived from the implementation of various CBIS. The development trend and preferences of various railway authorities are also considered. It has modular hardware and software and a standard data structure. The system architecture and hardware modules are selected to obtain the standardized solution, optimal performances and general use of the system, maximizing use of commercial, industrial, hardware components. The main improvement is a direct conversion of the operational, functional and safety requirements of an interlocking system (the expert knowledge of signal engineers) into general interlocking software. The approach is based on the computer data file – Computer Control Table, which summarizes signalling and functional requirements. The general interlocking software is independent of the interlocking hardware. The software is maximally defined and developed in advance. Therefore, there is no need for the development of significant number of interlocking functions during the data preparation. This is not the case for the majority of the existing CBIS. The original algorithms are also realized for the following: controls and indications, automated design of all required data files, simulation, maintenance support and recording of regular and irregular events. All algorithms of Universal CBIS are implemented in the form of a software package, which can run on a personal computer. The correctness of developed algorithms is proved by the simulation and testing. The simulation has confirmed a fast realization of software for a selected railway station. The realization is based only on the signalling arrangement and conventional Control Table. As a result, the efficiencies of the design, checking and testing of software and commissioning of the system are significantly increased.
